Corfu Town can only be called a delightful mish-mash. Here one can see Italianate architecture, Venetian monuments, Byzantine churches, a French arcade that is the center of cafe life, a museum of Asian art housed in an old English palace, a cricket field on the town green, and all of this is under the watchful eyes of two old fortresses, one dating back to the 6th century.

Spianada Square is the largest square in Corfu and the heart of the town. The raised terrace was created for defensive purposes under Venetian rule and the square assumed its final form in more modern times under the French and British rulers of the island. Essentially it consists of two squares, divided in the middle by Viktoros Dousmani Street (where you will find a taxi stand and carriages for hire). The northern side of the Spianada is dominated by the Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George, home of the Museum of Asian Art, and the Municipal Gallery. In the garden, known as the People's Garden, you will find the Municipal Cafe, a classic meeting point in town with its fine view of Vido island.

The Liston, built by the French in the same style as those in Rue de Rivoli, Paris. The Liston is an arcade lined with cafes perfect for people watching. Shopping is good in and around here. Shops are generally open from 9:00 AM - 1:30 PM and again from 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM on Thursdays.

The church of Saint Spyridon is located in the Old Town of Corfu, right behind Liston. It has the largest bell tower of all churches in the city and it is its red dome that visitors first see when they arrive by boat to Corfu. This saint is the protector of the island, and the myth says that he saved the town from a plague in the 17th century.
The Old Fortress of Corfu stands next to Spianada Square and Liston. It is an impressive castle built on a peninsula into the sea and connected to the mainland by a narrow bridge. The Old Fort which dates back to the 6th century has some stunning architecture. A lighthouse stands on its top and offers great view of the town and the sea.

The Fortress Of Saint Mark is also known as the New Fortress of Corfu. The New Fortress was built between 1572 and 1645 by the Venetians and played an important role for the protection of the town against pirates and enemies. The entire fortress is an intricate network of compartments and galleries. The New Fortress is found on the hill of Agios Markos.

The Archaeological Museum is located on Vraila Street, near the Garitsa coastal road and was built to house the Gorgon pediment from the temple of Artemis which was found in the area of Paleopolis. This pediment is dated back to 580 BC and is supposed to be the oldest one in Greece.

The Museum of Asiatic Art is unique in Greece and one of the most important of its kind in Europe. It contains some eleven thousand exhibits spanning the eleventh century BC to the twentieth century AD from a variety of Asian countries The greater part of the collection, more than ten thousand objects, come from China and Japan, while the rest come from Tibet, Korea, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Thailand and Cambodia. The museum is housed in the Saints Michael and George Palace (the Royal Palace), an imposing three-storied building and a fine example of neoclassical architecture, located at the northern end of the Spianada.
